Terrace arrangement: how to create a space that combines comfort and functionality

A terrace is a special place in a house or apartment that can become an oasis of relaxation, a place to meet friends or a space for working outdoors. To make your terrace truly cosy and functional, you need to think about every detail. We’ll look at the main secrets of terrace furnishing that will help you create the perfect space for your leisure and work.

Secrets of terrace furnishing

  1. Choosing furniture
  • Materials and style

The basis of any terrace is furniture. It should be not only comfortable but also resistant to weather conditions. The most popular materials for terrace furniture are:

1) Rattan: natural or artificial, it adds warmth and cosiness, but needs to be protected from moisture.
2) Wood: a classic choice, but wooden furniture needs regular maintenance and treatment with protective agents.
3) Metal: a strong and durable material, but it is important to choose options with an anti-corrosion coating.
4) Plastic: lightweight and practical, modern plastic furniture can look very stylish and is not afraid of rain.

The style of furniture depends on the overall concept of your space. It can be minimalism, Provence, boho or classic – the choice is yours.

  • Functionality

Convenience and functionality of furniture on the terrace are of great importance. Consider using transformers: folding tables, folding chairs, or benches with storage space. This will allow you to use the space as efficiently as possible.

2. Textiles and accessories

  • Pillows and rugs

Textiles are the element that adds cosiness to any space. Brightly coloured cushions, soft rugs and mats make the terrace more homely and comfortable. It is important to choose textiles that are easy to wash and resistant to moisture and sun.

  • Protection from the sun and wind

Awnings, awnings or curtains can be used to protect against excessive sun or wind. They not only fulfil a practical function, but also add style to your terrace. Lightweight, translucent fabrics look particularly impressive and create a light and fresh atmosphere.

3. Lighting

Proper lighting is the key to a cosy atmosphere on the terrace. Use a combination of different types of lighting:

  • Basic lighting: lanterns or lamps that provide sufficient light in the evening.
  • Decorative lighting: garlands, candles, lanterns that create a romantic atmosphere.
  • Functional lighting: table lamps or floor lamps for reading or working areas.

4. Plants.

Plants are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also healthy. They purify the air and create a pleasant microclimate. You can place flower pots, ampelous plants, vertical gardens or even small herb gardens on your terrace. Arrange the plants so that they do not interfere with movement, but create a cosy atmosphere.

5. Rest and work areas

Divide the terrace into functional areas:

  • Relaxation area: upholstered furniture, cushions, rugs, coffee table.
  • Dining area: table, chairs, possibly a barbecue or grill.
  • Work area: a table, a comfortable chair, sockets for connecting a laptop or charging gadgets.

6. Decorative elements

Do not forget about the details that add personality to your terrace:

  • Paintings or posters: resistant to moisture, they can become a bright accent.
  • Sculptures or figurines: add originality and style.
  • Decorative cushions and blankets: they can be changed according to the season or mood.

7. Space organisation

To make the terrace look neat, it is important to organise the storage of things. Use boxes, baskets or shelves to store pillows, rugs, crockery and other small items. This will help keep things tidy and make the space more functional.

8. Use natural materials

Natural materials add warmth and cosiness. Use wood, stone, clay in your decor and furniture. This creates harmony with nature and makes the terrace more attractive.

9. Seasonal use

Think about how you will use the terrace in different seasons. For example, in autumn and winter, you can add warm blankets, heaters or even a fireplace. This will allow you to enjoy your terrace even in cooler weather.

10. Planning considerations

If you have the opportunity, plan the terrace in such a way that it is protected from the wind and sun. Place furniture in such a way as to create cosy corners for relaxation and work. Use pergolas, awnings or greenery to create shade.
Furnishing a terrace is a creative process that requires attention to detail. It is important to combine comfort and functionality to create a space where you can enjoy every minute. Use our tips, experiment with design and materials, and your terrace will become your favourite place in the house.

More about the project

How to combine the seemingly incompatible?
We are talking about a cool terrace where the main task was to organise two zones: sports and relaxation.

Let’s start with the barbecue area.
Here we have created a functional kitchen with a sink and grill, where you can conveniently cook outdoors. The dining area is designed for a large company, allowing you to enjoy your meal in a friendly atmosphere.
For relaxation, we have arranged a comfortable sofa, where you can not only sit but also sleep in the summer heat. There is a lot of greenery around, which adds cosiness and freshness.

To ensure privacy, we installed a wooden floor that separates the terrace from the neighbours. Additionally, we installed metal partitions with a mobile roof, which protect from rain and heat, allowing you to spend time on the terrace comfortably in any weather. For the flooring, we used decking, which is strong and durable and adds an aesthetic look to the entire space.

The sports area is designed to meet the needs for effective training. We have installed weight training equipment that allows you to conduct full-fledged workouts right outdoors. A large mirror located in this area helps to control the correctness of the exercises and also visually expands the space, adding a sense of freedom and lightness.
We paid special attention to safety: the opening in the wall is covered with glass. This solution not only provides protection, but also allows you to preserve the beautiful panoramic view that opens from the terrace.
Thanks to the glass, natural light freely penetrates the sports area, making training even more enjoyable and comfortable.

Such an organisation of space allows you to enjoy sports while enjoying the beauty of the environment.
The interiors should be beautiful and meet modern standards in every element.
