Guest room in an apartment: features, nuances and pitfalls

Modern apartments often require multifunctional solutions, especially when it comes to compact spaces. One of these solutions is a guest room, a room that serves as a comfortable workspace during the day and turns into a cosy bedroom for guests when needed. How do you make this space comfortable and harmonious? Designers share their tips.

Functional zoning

One of the main features of a guest room is the correct distribution of space. Two main zones should be clearly defined:

  • The working area – a comfortable desk, an armchair, a place to store documents.
  • The guest room – a comfortable sofa bed or a transformable bed.

Transforming furniture: a smart solution

The main challenge in creating a guest room is to place all the necessary elements without losing free space. This is where transforming furniture comes in:

  • A folding table that takes up minimal space when folded and allows you to work fully when unfolded.
  • A sofa bed or a bed that hides into a wardrobe is ideal for saving space.
  • Wall shelves – instead of bulky cabinets, they store work materials and do not overload the interior.

Lighting: a key element

To make the space comfortable for both work and leisure, it is important to think about lighting:

  • Work light – a table lamp or pendant light with neutral light for productivity.
  • General lighting – warm light sources create a cosy atmosphere for guests.
  • Additional lighting – LED strips, wall lamps or floor lamps add to the atmosphere.

Storage: how to avoid chaos?

To keep the room free of clutter, you need to provide enough storage space:

  • Wardrobes or built-in wardrobes will help you hide everything you don’t need.
  • Drawers under the sofa or bed are a convenient place for bed linen or seasonal clothes.
  • Organisers on the table or in drawers are for stationery and documents.

Pitfalls: what to consider?

  • Insufficient sound insulation. If you work from home, it is important to minimise noise. Use carpets, textiles, and thick curtains to absorb sounds.
  • Uncomfortable sofa. Cheap models often have hard joints that make it difficult for guests to sleep comfortably. Choose high-quality folding models.
  • Overload of space. Try to stick to minimalism: the more free space you have, the easier it is to adapt the room to different needs.
  • Insufficient lighting. One ceiling chandelier is not enough. Think about several light sources for different scenarios of room use.

A guest room is a good solution for those who want to have both a workspace and a place for guests. The main thing is to organise the space properly, choose comfortable furniture and take care of lighting and storage. By planning a room according to these principles, you will get a functional and comfortable space that can be easily adapted to any needs.

More about the project

Home office + guest room: a stylish combination. This space is the perfect balance between functionality and comfort. During the day, it’s a comfortable office with a desk, hidden shelves and even lighting. In the evening, it is a cosy guest room where a straight sofa can easily be transformed into a full bed.

The atmosphere is complemented by hidden lighting on the wall behind the sofa. Panoramic windows fill the space with light, while black accents in the fittings and lamps add a stylish contrast. Minimalism, thoughtful ergonomics and cosiness – all in one solution!
