Functional design for stores with refrigerated display cases: nuances to keep in mind
Chilled displays are the heart of any store that sells meat, dairy, delicatessen or semi-finished products. It is here that the customer makes the main decision whether to buy or not. However, it is important to remember that even the most modern display case will not be able to work effectively if it is not properly integrated into the space. That is why the design of a store with refrigerated display cases should not only be aesthetically pleasing, but also as functional as possible.
Key aspects of functional design with refrigerated display cases
1. Planning the space around the display cases
The first rule is convenience for the customer. The displays should be placed in such a way as to provide a logical route of movement: from the entrance to the main product area and then to the checkout. If the customer has to go back or cross paths with other customers, it creates chaos and reduces the level of satisfaction from visiting the store.
It’s also important to provide enough space in front of each display to allow several people to stop at the same time. Narrow aisles always cause discomfort, especially during peak hours.
2. Technical requirements for display cases and ventilation
Refrigerated equipment has its own peculiarities – the heat it generates must be removed to avoid overheating and malfunctions. In a small store without proper ventilation, this can be a critical problem. Therefore, the design should take into account not only the location of the display cases, but also technical service areas, ventilation shafts, access to the power grid, etc.
In addition, it is worthwhile to provide additional electrical outlets for future equipment upgrades, which will reduce the cost of reconstructing the space in case of changes.
3. Appearance of display cases is part of the design
Modern refrigerated display cases can be stylish. Their appearance is no longer limited to glass and metal – many manufacturers offer models with decorative inserts, coloured panels, and lighting. The designer’s task is to integrate them into the overall style of the space.
If the store has branded colours, they can be played up in the design of the shop fronts, the wall decoration behind, and decorative elements. It is important to maintain a balance – the focus should remain on the product, not on the design of the shop window.
4. Lighting is an appetite enhancer
Special attention should be paid to lighting. Properly selected light makes the product more attractive: meat looks juicier, cheese looks more appetising, and cakes look fresher. Lighting should be not only functional (general, working), but also accent lighting, with lamps directed at the product.
The light should also not create glare on the glass of the display case or change the natural shade of the products – this can negatively affect the perception of the product.
5. Areas for staff service
Behind the shop windows is a life that the customer does not see. That is why it is worthwhile to provide convenient workplaces for staff: access to scales, packaging materials, additional refrigerators or freezers. This not only increases the efficiency of service, but also affects the customer’s impression – when a salesperson works quickly and accurately, the store is perceived as more professional.
6. The harmony of functionality and style
The main thing in designing a store with refrigerated display cases is to find a balance between technology and style. It is not only about convenience, but also about the atmosphere. The space should look modern, but not cold. Laconic, but with accents. Functional, but not ‘warehouse-like’.
A successful project is one where the client intuitively understands the route, sees the product in a favourable light, does not feel fuss, and wants to come back again.
More about the project
The «Drohobytski Kovbasy» Shop is not just a retail space, but a stylish gastronomic journey for every customer.
The interior combines modern design with easy navigation: the areas for meat, sausages, delicacies and cash registers are divided logically and thoughtfully. The contrast of black and white emphasises premium and purity, while wood adds warmth. Arrows on the floor and signs from the ceiling lead you to the right section, as if you’ve known everything here for a long time. And the main wall with a bright sign is the accent that does not allow you to pass by.
The checkout area is the final chord of the customer’s route, so we made sure it was pleasant and comfortable. Clear lines, laconic design, plenty of space for shopping and a comfortable height of the counter – everything is thought out to the smallest detail.
Accent lighting emphasises the quality of service, creating an atmosphere of trust. It’s easy to pay, convenient to pack your purchases and not to catch a glimpse of unnecessary things – only what is really important. This is an area where style does not hinder, but helps. Here, design works for the brand, and space works for convenience.
