Спальня під мансардним дахом

How to plan a bedroom under a sloping roof: an expert guide from an interior design studio

A bedroom under a mansard roof is not a ‘difficult room’ but a space with character. Sloping ceilings create an atmosphere of intimacy, comfort and architectural expressiveness. But for the interior to look well thought out and not randomly arranged, competent planning is required.

Let’s start with geometry: analysing heights

The first thing we do when working with an attic is to analyse the heights in detail.

  • A height of 210 cm is considered sufficient for passage.
  • The 160–200 cm zone can be used for furniture.
  • Anything below 120-140 cm is ideal for storage.

The biggest mistake is to place the bed at the highest point just because ‘it’s convenient to walk there.’ It is often more logical to place it in the lower part if the height allows for comfortable seating.

Bed placement: centre or asymmetry?

Symmetry does not always work in an attic. If the roof is asymmetrical, maintain this geometry in the composition.

Options:

  • headboard under the slope – for cosiness
  • asymmetrical composition with one bedside table

The main thing is to check that the height in the seating area is at least 120-130 cm, otherwise there will be a feeling of a ‘pressing’ ceiling.

Storage under the slopes: individual solutions

An attic almost always requires custom-made furniture. Standard wardrobes rarely fit correctly.

What works best:

  • built-in wardrobes with cut-off fronts
  • pull-out modules under low slopes
  • open shelves with lighting
  • chests of drawers with a depth of 40-45 cm

Properly designed storage under the slopes allows you to use up to 30% of the additional space that is usually lost.

Lighting: scenarios instead of a single chandelier

In attic bedrooms, a central chandelier often looks out of place. Instead, scenario solutions work well:

  • spotlights along the slope
  • hidden lighting along the roof line
  • braces or pendants near the bed
  • warm light temperature of 2700–3000K

Light helps to ‘unload’ the sloping ceiling and emphasise the geometry.

Colour and ceiling: paint or highlight?

There are two professional approaches:

  • A ceiling in the same colour as the walls reduces contrast and visually calms the space.
  • Emphasis on geometry – if we want to emphasise the architecture.

In bedrooms, we often choose the first option. A single colour field removes the fragmentation of planes and creates a sense of harmony.

Heat and noise insulation

Attic rooms are more sensitive to overheating and rain noise. Therefore, it is important to have:

  • high-quality roof insulation
  • the right double-glazed windows
  • blackout curtains or roller blinds

Without this, even the most beautiful design will not be comfortable to use.

A bedroom under a mansard roof is always about individuality. Template solutions do not work here. It is important not to ‘adapt’ the space to standard furniture, but on the contrary, to design the interior in accordance with its architecture.

Competent planning allows you to turn complex geometry into the main advantage of the space and create a bedroom that you never want to leave.

More about the project

This project is about thoughtful simplicity. Light, warm shades create cosiness, while the ceiling in the same colour as the walls visually reduces the height and adds intimacy and tranquillity to the bedroom.

We turned the supporting structure of the chimney behind the bed into an advantage: it created a niche with warm lighting, which set the asymmetrical composition of the space. Nothing superfluous — just balance and silence.
