Scandinavian style principles in interior design
Scandinavian style is not just a fashionable design trend, but a whole philosophy of life that reflects a love of simplicity, functionality and naturalness. Having originated in the Nordic countries, it has become popular all over the world due to its versatility and ability to create cosiness even in the harshest climatic conditions.
The main principles that form the basis of the Scandinavian style in interior design are
1. Simplicity and minimalism
The main feature of the Scandinavian style is simplicity. The absence of unnecessary details, clean lines and laconic shapes create a sense of space even in small rooms. Furniture and decor have an exclusively practical function, each thing has its place and purpose. At the same time, simplicity does not mean coldness or monotony: the style combines minimalism with cosiness and warmth.
2. Natural materials
Scandinavian style tends to use natural materials. Wood, stone, linen, cotton are the basis for creating a harmonious interior. Wooden floors, furniture and decor in light colours add natural warmth to the room. The most commonly used wood species are pine, oak or ash, processed to preserve their natural texture.
3. Light colours
One of the key features of the Scandinavian style is the preference for light colours. White is the basic colour, and pastel shades of grey, blue, sand or beige add depth to the interior. This palette helps to visually expand the space and fill the room with light, which is especially important for northern countries with long winters.
4. Functionality in everything
In the Scandinavian style, every thing should be functional. The furniture is often multifunctional: sofas with storage space, transforming tables or shelves that also serve as decorative elements. The space is organised in such a way that everything is convenient and logical, without unnecessary chaos.
5. Natural light
Maximum natural light is another key principle of the Scandinavian style. Large windows without heavy curtains or with light translucent curtains allow maximum sunlight to enter. If there is not enough natural light, artificial lighting is used. Scandinavian interiors often use multi-level lighting: main chandeliers, wall sconces, floor lamps and candles that create soft diffused light.
6. Warmth and cosiness
Despite its minimalist character, Scandinavian style is always about comfort. Warm textures, soft rugs, long-pile carpets and pillows create a cosy atmosphere. For additional warmth, use accessories made of natural wool or fur.
7. Emphasis on naturalness
Scandinavian-style decor is usually restrained and simple. Houseplants are often used, which not only refresh the space but also create a natural accent. Flowerpots, dried flower arrangements or simple branches in vases add life to the interior.
8. Integrating environmental friendliness
The Scandinavian style is closely linked to the desire for sustainable development. Using environmentally friendly materials, recycling old things or reusing them is part of the style philosophy. For example, old furniture is often restored to give it a new look.
9. Contrasting accents
Although the Scandinavian style predominantly uses a light palette, small contrasting accents add expressiveness to the interior. Black frames, graphic prints, lamps or decorative elements help to diversify the space and make it more interesting.
10. Harmony with nature
The Scandinavian style is aimed at creating a space that is in harmony with nature. Large windows overlooking the garden or forest, natural materials and a minimum of artificial elements help to feel unity with the environment.
How to apply the Scandinavian style in your home?
- Start with the basics: light walls, natural floors, minimal furniture.
- Use simple but high-quality materials.
- Add some contrast with accessories.
- Don’t forget about comfort: rugs, pillows, warm lighting.
- Bring in nature: plants, wooden accents and natural fabrics.
Scandinavian style is not only about design, but also about a way of thinking. It teaches us to appreciate simple things, live in harmony with nature and find beauty in minimalism. Due to its versatility, this style has remained popular and relevant for decades, ideal for creating a cosy and functional home.
More about the project
Maximum sun, space, functionality, and comfort! This project was created in compliance with the main principles of the Scandinavian style, which is appreciated for its simplicity, harmony, and comfort. We wanted every element here to work to create an atmosphere of lightness and tranquillity.
1. Sun in every corner
The light shades of the walls and the warm tone of the wood allow you to fill the room with natural light even on cloudy days. The combination of blue walls and orange wood reminds us of nature – the sky and autumn leaves. These are colours that perfectly complement each other and create a cosy harmony.
2. Thoughtful functionality
There is nothing superfluous in the room, but at the same time everything you need for life and relaxation.
The soft window sill has become a favourite place for reflection, reading or just contemplation of the view from the window.
The table by the bed has a double role – as a dressing table or work area. It is convenient for those who appreciate functionality in a limited space.
A dressing room with boho sliding doors allows you to keep things in perfect order without overloading the interior.
3. Cosiness in every detail
Everything is important in this room – from fabric textures to accessories. Lightweight textiles, warm wooden surfaces and natural accents create an atmosphere in which you want to relax, recover and feel at home.
This project demonstrates how to strike a balance between minimalism and comfort. There is nothing superfluous, but it is impossible to take anything away. This is real design that serves people!
