Features of interior design development for cafes: from concept to implementation

The interior design of commercial premises, such as cafes, plays a crucial role in creating an atmosphere that attracts customers and shaping the unique style of the establishment. A well-designed interior affects not only the aesthetic perception but also the emotional experience of guests, increasing their comfort level, which contributes to an increase in the number of visitors and, as a result, the revenue of the establishment.

What should you consider when creating an interior design for commerce?

1. Defining the concept and style

The first thing to do when developing a cafe design is to define the overall concept of the establishment. It should be appropriate for the audience the café is targeting, as well as take into account its location, the culture of the region and unique elements that can distinguish it from its competitors. For example, a café aimed at a younger audience may have a modern, minimalist design with bright accents, while a family-friendly establishment may prefer warm, cosy colours and natural materials.

It is important to take into account the style, which should not only be attractive, but also be in harmony with the concept of the establishment. Popular styles of cafes include:

-Loft – open plan, high ceilings, exposed communications, use of metal and wood;
-Scandinavian style – light colours, simple shapes, natural materials, minimalism;
-Retro – bright colours, furniture and decor inspired by a certain era;
-Eco style – natural materials, lots of greenery, eco-oriented solutions.

2. Zoning the space

Functionality is a key aspect when creating a cafe design. To ensure the convenience of visitors and staff, it is necessary to properly zone the premises. Here are the main zones that should be provided in a cafe:
– The visitors’ area is the main part of the premises where tables and seats for guests are located. It is important to consider both the number of seats and their location for maximum comfort;
– Bar area – in some cafes, the bar is the central element of the interior, so its design should be stylish and functional at the same time;
– Kitchen – the space for food preparation should be organised in such a way as to ensure efficient work of the staff;
– Waiting area – in high-traffic establishments, a comfortable place for waiting or take-away should be provided.
Zoning should also take into account convenient movement between zones, in particular for staff, which will avoid chaos and improve the quality of service.

3. Choosing materials and colours

The materials used to make furniture, floors, walls and other interior elements should be not only stylish but also durable. In a cafe, materials are constantly exposed to stress, so it is important to choose materials that are easy to clean, resistant to damage and retain their appearance for a long time. Tiles, concrete or laminate are popular for floors, and easy-to-clean paint, tiles or wallpaper for walls.
The colour scheme should match the overall style and concept of the establishment. Light colours will help to visually enlarge the room, while rich, bright colours can create a dynamic atmosphere. For example, pastel or warm colours can be used to create a cosy atmosphere, while contrasting colours with bright accents can be used for a bright and modern cafe.

4. Lighting

Lighting in a cafe is one of the key elements that creates the atmosphere. Different types of lighting can be used to zone the space and create different moods: main, accent and decorative. For example, in the table area, you can use soft, subdued lighting to create a cosy atmosphere, while the bar area can be highlighted with brighter, accent lighting.
It is also important to take into account natural light. Large windows can add more light to the space and create an open feeling. However, excessive light can be uncomfortable for visitors, so it is worth providing curtains or blinds to regulate the lighting.

5. Furniture and decor

Furniture in a cafe should not only be stylish, but also comfortable and practical. Chairs, tables, and sofas should match the concept of the establishment and provide maximum comfort for guests. It is also important to pay attention to the durability of the furniture, as it is subject to constant use.
As for the decor, it should emphasise the overall style of the cafe and create a cosy atmosphere. It can be paintings, posters, plants, decorative lighting or elements that tell the story of the brand.

6. Acoustics

It is important to consider the issue of acoustics in a cafe. A too loud atmosphere can be uncomfortable for visitors, so you need to provide solutions to reduce noise. The use of acoustic panels, soft materials (curtains, carpets, textiles) and the correct arrangement of furniture will help make the space more cosy and convenient for communication.

7. Inclusivity and convenience

Modern cafes are increasingly implementing inclusive solutions that make the establishment accessible to people with different needs. This applies not only to the availability of ramps or special toilets, but also to the correct arrangement of furniture that allows all guests to move freely.

8. Trends in cafe design

There are several important trends in modern cafe design:
– Environmental friendliness – the use of natural materials, reuse of interior items, minimisation of plastic elements.
– Multifunctionality – creating a space that can be used for various events, from coffee meetings to exhibitions.
– Interactivity – the introduction of interactive elements, such as interactive menus or the integration of digital technologies into the decor.

Interior design for a cafe is a complex process that requires taking into account many aspects: from the choice of style and space zoning to materials, lighting and acoustics. A well-designed interior can be the main advantage of a café, creating a unique atmosphere that will attract customers and ensure their comfort during their stay.

More about the project

Imagine a place where contemporary art meets gastronomy, creating a unique atmosphere.
The Kyiv hot dog restaurant is not just a restaurant, it is an art space where every corner tells its own story.
The interior, like a gallery, combines different types of art: from bold metal structures to delicate plaster sculptures hidden behind glass.

A special accent is the arch that separates the bar area and the main hall, where metal and glass create the impression of a graceful transition between styles. This is a space where aesthetics and taste go hand in hand.
The bar area is a real artistic wonder, where every detail is carefully thought out. 3D tiles on the walls create a fascinating optical effect that visually expands the space and adds texture. And mirrored shelves play with light, reflecting the colourful details of the interior and making the atmosphere even more dynamic.
The elegant metal and glass structure above the bar serves as the basis for the decor, which features plaster sculptures and fresh flowers, emphasising the harmonious combination of art and nature. Bar tables on both sides of the area add convenience for socialising and tasting our signature dishes.
This is a place where every guest can immerse themselves in the atmosphere of contemporary art without leaving the comfort of their favourite cafe.

Interiors should be beautiful to make us feel comfortable and inspired by beauty!
