Lounge zones in shops: combining comfort and marketing

Modern retail has long gone beyond the usual ‘selling goods.’ Buyers come not only for things, but also for experiences. The atmosphere of the store, the comfort of the visit, and even the mood created by the interior directly influence the decision to buy. One of the key tools for creating this experience is lounge areas — specially designed spaces for relaxation that combine aesthetics and marketing.

Why lounge areas have become an important part of stores

A few years ago, comfortable relaxation areas were more of a ‘bonus.’ Today, they have become a necessity. There are several reasons for this:

  • Changing consumer habits. People expect more from shops than just shopping. They want emotions, inspiration and a pleasant time.
  • Competition from online commerce. Physical shops must offer what online shops cannot — live contact, atmosphere and the opportunity to immerse oneself in the world of the brand.
  • The Instagram effect. Visually appealing spaces encourage customers to take photos, share content on social media and effectively advertise the brand for free.

In this way, the lounge area becomes a strategic element of marketing communication.

Design that shapes the experience

The lounge area should combine several important functions:

  • Aesthetic. It should be visually striking, with a well-thought-out accent — this could be a designer armchair, unique decoration or art object.
  • Practical. Comfortable seating, a table for coffee or magazines, and the right lighting create a feeling of customer care.
  • Marketing. Every detail should work for the brand: colours, textures, materials, decorative elements that echo the company’s identity.

For example, a chair with a bright character from a local manufacturer can become not only part of the interior, but also a ‘focal point’ for photos. Decorative details — flowers, textiles, art installations — enhance the atmosphere and add depth to the space.

Impact on customer behaviour

The lounge area does more than just serve as a comfortable waiting area. It:

  1. Keeps visitors in the space. The longer a person stays in the store, the higher the likelihood of a purchase.
  2. Forms positive associations. Comfort and care leave a pleasant impression, which directly influences loyalty.
  3. Encourages recommendations. Customers are happy to share photos and videos from aesthetic areas, effectively turning their own experience into a promotional tool.

Trends in lounge area design

In modern design, there are several trends that are most often used in shops:

  1. Minimalism with emphasis. Laconic forms and light colours are complemented by one bright object.
  2. Natural materials. Wood, linen, and decorative plants create an atmosphere of comfort and trust.
  3. Photogenicity. Every element, from lighting to furniture placement, is geared towards the perfect shot.
  4. Multifunctionality. A lounge area can be a waiting area, a test area, and a backdrop for promotional shoots all at once.

Lounge areas are not only a fashionable interior element but also an investment in brand development. They strike a balance between comfort for customers and benefits for the business. A well-designed space acts as a visual magnet, reinforces marketing strategies, and creates a unique experience that customers want to repeat and recommend.

Therefore, in the shops of the future, the lounge area will not be an additional option, but a mandatory tool for effective design.

More about the project

In this project, we combined a beauty salon and a shop into a single space where both functions complement each other harmoniously. Thanks to thoughtful zoning, we managed to create an atmosphere of lightness and comfort, where it is pleasant to work and shop.

The shop is decorated in light colours with an emphasis on minimalism: convenient shelves for goods, a testing area, a large mirror for photos and a cosy waiting area. It is separated from the salon by a massive beige curtain, which simultaneously serves as a privacy screen and a stylish accent.

We designed the office to be concise and functional, but at the same time cosy. Before that, we analysed the client’s previous experience in detail to take into account all the nuances and eliminate any inconveniences. The result is a space where the beautician feels comfortable working and customers feel comfortable spending time.

The highlight of the store is the Instagram zone, which has become a real magnet for visitors. Every photo or story tag from this stylish space works for the brand, creating an emotional connection with the audience. The central accent here is a chair from the Ukrainian brand Koloda Chair, complemented by decorative spikelets and a table. These details create an atmosphere that inspires you to stop, relax and share your impressions.
