Why customers avoid dark and bright colours in the bedroom – and why they’re missing out

In interior design practice, we regularly encounter the same trend: clients opt for light, neutral shades for the bedroom, steering clear of dark or bold colours. White, beige and light grey are safe choices that seem to be universally appealing. However, this ‘safety’ often masks a loss of the space’s individuality.

So why are people afraid of dark and bright colours?

First and foremost, it is a psychological factor. There is a stereotype that dark shades ‘shrink’ the space and make it gloomy. Many worry that the bedroom will become too heavy or even oppressive. The second reason is the fear of making a mistake. Rich colours are harder to combine, and clients fear that the interior will quickly become tiresome or look disharmonious.
It is also worth considering the influence of the mass market: most ready-made solutions in furniture and décor are geared specifically towards a neutral palette. This creates the feeling that ‘this is the right way’.

So why take the ‘risk’?

From a professional perspective, concerns about dark colours are largely unfounded.
Bright accents, on the other hand, add character. They bring an interior to life, making it unique and a true reflection of the owner’s personality. This could be an accent wall, textiles or furniture – even small splashes of colour can radically transform the atmosphere.
It is important to understand: it is not about the colour itself, but about using it skilfully. A professional designer works with balance – light, textures, materials and lighting compensate for the richness of the palette. For example, dark walls combined with warm light and soft fabrics create cosiness rather than drama.
Moreover, contemporary trends are increasingly gravitating towards deep, complex shades. Interiors are becoming more personalised, moving away from ‘sterile’ minimalism. And the bedroom is the ideal place for experimentation, as it is the most private area of the home.

So, avoiding dark and bright colours is more of a habit than an objective necessity. In reality, such choices open up far broader possibilities for creating an atmosphere that not only looks stylish but also genuinely promotes comfort and relaxation.
Sometimes, all it takes is one bold move to transform a bedroom from ‘just nice’ into a truly unique space with character.

More about the project

A bedroom where you can feel the warmth even before you get into bed. In this project, the designers opted for a deep terracotta shade, which adds character and cosiness to the interior. The slatted wardrobe fronts not only look striking but also make the storage system light and airy.
A soft headboard, warm wood, brass-coloured light fittings and textured textiles bring the space together into a harmonious bedroom where you’ll want to relax and start the new day without rushing.
