Why practicality is more important than trends in interior design

Modern interior design has long since ceased to be merely about creating a pretty picture. Today, people are increasingly opting not just for aesthetics, but for a comfortable environment for everyday life. In recent years, client requirements have changed significantly: whereas the main focus used to be on the ‘wow factor’, practicality, functionality and ease of maintenance are now taking centre stage.

According to statistics, people spend around 60–70% of their time at home. That is precisely why an interior must work not only in a photograph or a visualisation, but also in real life – every day, for years on end, without constant discomfort or complicated maintenance.

A practical interior saves time

One of the main reasons people have come to value functionality more is the pace of life. On average, people spend between 4 and 6 hours a week just cleaning their homes. Ill-considered materials, complex textures, a large number of decorative elements, or surfaces with visible marks significantly increase this time.

That is precisely why practical design is not about being “boring”. It is about comfort, ease of maintenance and well-thought-out solutions that simplify daily life.

For example:

  • matt surfaces show fingerprints less noticeably;
  • large-format tiles have fewer joints and are therefore easier to clean;
  • light grey and warm beige shades stay looking neat for longer;
  • сoncealed storage systems help to avoid visual clutter.

The kitchen is a space where practicality is particularly important

The kitchen is one of the busiest areas in an apartment or house. Every day, it is exposed to moisture, temperature fluctuations, grease, cleaning products and physical wear and tear. Therefore, a design that is attractive but impractical will very quickly start to cause problems.

Particular attention should be paid to the kitchen splashback. A large number of joints not only makes cleaning more difficult but can also lose its aesthetic appeal over time due to grout staining. That is why the following have become popular today:

  • large porcelain stoneware slabs;
  • glass splashbacks;
  • quartz surfaces;
  • minimalist solutions without small tiles.

It is also important to choose the right kitchen cabinet fronts. Glossy surfaces may look striking, but require much more frequent maintenance. For everyday use, most customers opt for matt finishes or fronts with a subtle texture.

Trends change – comfort remains

Interior trends change every few years. What looked on-trend in 2020 may already be losing popularity today. But a renovation isn’t done for just one season. On average, people update their interiors once every 10–15 years, so the basis of good design should be not short-lived fads, but the durability of solutions.

That is precisely why professional interior design strikes a balance between contemporary aesthetics and people’s real needs. It is important to consider the family’s lifestyle, the presence of children or pets, the amount of natural light, how the space will be used, and even the residents’ habits.

Design should work for people

The main purpose of interior design is not to complicate life. A beautiful space is one that is easy to keep tidy, comfortable to relax in, and a pleasure to live in every day.
That is why, today, practicality is not a compromise on beauty, but a new level of quality design. Well-chosen materials, functional solutions and attention to detail create interiors that remain relevant, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing for many years.

More about the project

A kitchen where life isn’t ‘for the photos’, but for warm, everyday moments.
Practical, stain-resistant fronts, surfaces that are easy to keep clean, a large sink and plenty of storage space — everything has been designed with the comfort of a large family and a busy lifestyle in mind.
And most importantly, we have brought the clients’ dreams to life: a cosy breakfast island and an aquarium that has become a real focal point of the dining area and creates a special atmosphere at home.
An interior should not only be beautiful, but also comfortable for you.
